- Hi guys, I get some doubts in relation with offset a polysurface in Rhino, i´m wondering how can we obtain a an clean offset performed on a polysurface, with the same result as if we use WB thickness based on distance diagonals, becouse due to the complexity of the shape the offset on a polysurface always seems collapse mainly if we work with.
Jan 31, 2020 I’m trying to speed up design and fabrication of complex forms using plywood and MDF sheet. I’ve found that both the Rhino command Grasshopper components for OffsetSrf frequently fail to produce good results. Specifically, with polysurfaces with only planar faces, when the polysurface has a combination of triangular and ngon faces and/or a combination of convex and concave edges, the results are buggy and unusable.

The OffsetSrf command copies a surface or polysurface so that locations on the copied surface are the same specified distance from the original surface.
Steps

Options
Distance
Specifies a distance for the offset.
Corner
Round
Creates a fillet at sharp corners in the original surface.
Sharp
Maintains the sharp corner when the original surface has a sharp corner.
FlipAll
Flips the offset direction of all selected surfaces. Arrows indicate the positive offset direction.
Solid
Makes a closed solid from the input and offset surfaces by lofting a ruled surface between all of the matching edges.
Loose (Surfaces only)
The resulting surface point structure is identical to the original surface.
Tolerance
Sets the tolerance for the offset surface. Type 0 to use the default tolerance.
BothSides
Draws the offset on both sides of the original.

| ● | When offsetting surfaces are joined that are part of a polysurface, there is no guarantee that the offset surfaces will also join into another polysurface. For example, offsetting the six sides of a box will not result in a larger closed box. It will return six separate surfaces with gaps between the edges. |

Offsetsrf Failure On Complex Polysurface Symptoms
Shell and OffsetSrf for polysurfaces are works in progress. There are several known problem areas:
| ● | Singular surfaces can cause problems, especially when the offset of the surface must be extended at the singularity. The extensions are done in OffsetSrf (Corner=Sharp) and shelling, which always uses sharp corners. These extensions happen when the offsets of adjacent surfaces come apart. Also, cone-like singularities cause problems in all cases. |
| ● | Complex vertices (ones with more than three edges) can be problematic, especially in shelling and sharp corner offsets and where some, but not all, of the surfaces at the vertex offset apart. |
| ● | OffsetSrf on polysurfaces with naked edges, where the naked edges make concave boundaries will not work correctly. |

| ● | If faces adjacent to the removed faces offset in such a way that the removed face must be extended to fill in the gap, it will fail. |
| ● | Any surface whose offset self-intersects will cause a problem. |

- This command can be used to deal with fabrics that have a certain amount of flexibility and stretch.
- The Smash command is a modified version of the UnrollSrf command. With UnrollSrf, the surface has to be linear in one direction to unroll, and with the Smash command it does not.
- Since it is not possible to flatten a double-curved object (like a half a coconut shell) to get a paper pattern, the answer is always inaccurate to some degree. This command is useful if the object you are flattening is not extremely curved and you want to make the pattern out of a stretchy material like rubber.
- Squish - Flattens a non-developable (curved in two directions) 3‑D mesh or NURBS surface into a flat 2‑D pattern.
- The Squish command displays statistics about the amount of compression or stretch.
- Squish can also mark areas of compression or stretching. Text dots mark the locations with the most dramatic deformation with the percentage of change.
- SquishBack - Returns curves and surfaces to the original squished 3-D shape.
- SquishInfo - Provides information about the settings used to squish the object.
